Man United eye Leeds United’s Illan Meslier as David de Gea successor

Manchester United want Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as David de Gea’s long-term replacement, reports the Sun.

The Red Devils want to extend the Spaniard’s contract but will only do so on lower wages.

De Gea currently earns £375,000 per week, but Man United want him on a £250,000-per-week deal.

The 32-year-old is out of contract in 2024 and the Old Trafford club are planning for life without him.

Dean Henderson is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but could finally get sold this summer as he seeks regular first-team football.

Meslier has proven himself in the Premier League since gaining promotion with Leeds in 2020.

The 22-year-old has been tipped to become a top contender for the French national team’s starting berth.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris retired after the World Cup last December and Meslier could finally get his chance.

A move to Man United would boost his chances with the national side, but the rivalry between the clubs could make a switch tricky.

However, Leeds would be forced to sell their top players if they are relegated. The Elland Road club are 19th in the Premier League after losing to Everton yesterday.

They have won just four out of 23 games and could struggle to escape the drop. Leeds parted with Jesse Marsch two weeks ago and have put Michael Skubala in charge.

The west Yorkshire club will hope to stave off relegation, but plenty of clubs will be monitoring their players.

Joining the Red Devils would change Meslier’s life as he would be challenging for major silverware and playing in the Champions League.
