Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is set to return to action against Newcastle United on Saturday, reports The Athletic.
The Dutch centre-back has been out of action since January. Van Dijk sustained a hamstring problem against Brentford on January 2.
The 31-year-old has missed the Reds’ last seven games across all competitions.
Liverpool have won just one Premier League game in Van Dijk’s absence, losing twice. They have dropped to ninth in the table, with nine points separating them from the top four.
Newcastle currently occupy fourth position in the Premier League after an outstanding first half of the season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are eyeing that spot, and a win at St James’ Park tomorrow would be a massive boost.
They secured a comprehensive 2-0 win over Everton at Anfield on Monday. Liverpool will be full of belief and head into the game against Eddie Howe’s side in high spirits.
Van Dijk’s return will also be an added boost. The Reds face Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 next Tuesday.
Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have played in central defence in the Dutchman’s absence.
They have struggled at times, with Jamie Carragher slamming them after the 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liverpool are also without French centre-back Ibrahima Konate due to a hamstring injury.
The 23-year-old picked up a knock in last month’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. He could return to action later this month or in early March.
Liverpool need to start winning regularly, and having both Van Dijk and Konate back will do them a world of good.
