PSG hold meeting with Messi’s representatives over new contract

Paris Saint-Germain have held their first meeting with the entourage of Lionel Messi over a potential new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Argentine World Cup winner’s future continues to be the subject of conflicting speculation, with his contract expiring in the summer.

Some reports claim that Messi has no problems continuing with PSG, while others suggest that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner could leave, with Inter Miami tipped as the potential destination.

However, Les Parisiens are keen to prolong the stay of the 36-year-old and have started constructive steps towards achieving it.

Messi’s father-cum-agent Jorge Messi is overseeing the negotiations as the duration of the contract and wages are being discussed. 

More meetings will follow in the coming weeks as Les Parisiens aim to secure the deal quickly.

Following a poor debut season in the French capital, the former Barcelona star has returned to his phenomenal best, netting 15 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

He also led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, winning the best player of the tournament in the process.

However, the start of the new year has been quite turbulent for the Argentine playmaker, with PSG experiencing a massive decline.

Les Parisiens recently succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, with Messi failing to rise to the occasion.

It was their third straight defeat following the setbacks against Marseille and AS Monaco.

If PSG come up short in the UCL once again, it could prompt another extensive overhaul in the summer, which would leave the futures of Neymar, Messi and others uncertain.
