Mohamed Salah ends 50-day scoring drought in Liverpool win over Everton

Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah has finally scored a goal in the Premier League after a barren 50-day run.

Salah netted in the first half as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Everton 2-0 this evening. The 30-year-old finished off a lightning-quick counter-attack for his goal.

Everton’s James Tarkowski crashed Alex Iwobi’s deep corner kick onto the bar, but Liverpool responded immediately as Salah set Darwin Nunez on his way.

Nunez crossed for Salah, and Everton keeper Jordan Pickford misread it, allowing the Egyptian to score.

Salah’s last goal came during his side’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa on December 26. He had gone five Premier League games without one.

He has netted 71 goals and 29 assists at Anfield. Salaah has bagged 18 goals and seven assists in 32 games this season.

Salah’s recent lack of goals coincided with a Liverpool goal drought. They had not scored since January 2.

It was Liverpool’s first league win of 2023, with their last victory coming against Leicester City on December 30.

It was a night of good news as Diogo Jota returned after four months out with an injury. He replaced the impressive Nunez. The fans will also have been happy to see centre-back Virgil Van Dijk on the bench.

January transfer window signing Cody Gakpo scored his first goal for the club and looked superb against Sean Dyche’s relegation battlers.

While Liverpool’s performance was excellent, the victory only took them to ninth place in the Premier League, a point above Chelsea

Liverpool are still adrift of the Champions League spots and face a fight to climb into the top four.

They play Newcastle United on Saturday and will be eager to cut the nine-point deficit between the two sides.
