Manchester City are embroiled in a Financial Fair Play controversy, with the Premier League accusing the reigning champions of several breaches.
There is growing speculation that Man City could be in for severe sanctions, including potential expulsion from the English top flight if they found guilty.
It has put the futures of almost the entire first-team squad in doubt, potentially giving top European clubs a great opportunity to snap up their desired targets from the Etihad Stadium.
Barcelona are one of several clubs paying close attention to the situation of Man City. As reported by Mundo Deportivo, they have set their sights on midfield duo Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.
Silva has been on the radar of Blaugrana for a long time, with the Portuguese midfielder heavily linked with a move to Camp Nou last summer. However, a hefty price tag saw the deal fall through.
The 28-year-old was also reportedly open to joining Barca in the hopes of a next chapter in his career, but his existing long-term contract at Etihad – which runs until 2025 – proved to be a stumbling block.
However, with a cloud hanging over Man City’s future, Silva may get his wish next summer.
Gundogan has been identified as a potential successor to Sergio Busquets in a blockbuster Bosman transfer.
The German midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season, and there haven’t been any significant steps taken towards his renewal.
Barca have made midfield one of their priorities for the summer, with Busquets and Franck Kessie linked with moves away from Camp Nou.
Busquets’ contract runs out in the summer, and there are conflicting reports about his future. He has been tipped to leave the club, although recent reports claim he could be in line for a new deal.
