Andoni Iraola turns down chance to become Leeds manager

Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola has rejected the chance to become Leeds United manager, reports Spanish outlet Onda Cero.

The Whites are searching for a new manager after dismissing Jesse Marsch on Monday.

They were keen on West Bromwich Albion’s Carlos Corberan, but their former assistant manager signed a new contract with the Baggies yesterday.

Iraola emerged as favourites for the job as a result. However, it appears the 40-year-old has decided to remain with Rayo.

The La Liga club are punching above their weight this season. They are fifth in the Spanish top-flight after 20 games, with three points between them and the top-four.

Rayo play a high-pressing style under Iraola, which attracted Leeds. The Elland Road club want to appoint a new manager before Sunday’s Premier League game with Manchester United.

Assistant manager Chris Armas and under-21 coaches Michael Skubala and Paco Gallardo were in charge of Wednesday’s game against the Red Devils.

Leeds drew 2-2 with their bitter rivals in their first game since Marsch was sacked. They were 2-0 up before Man United came from behind to snatch a point.

Despite their impressive outing at Old Trafford, Leeds’ weaknesses were laid bare. The next manager has plenty of work to do to keep this team up.

Tonight’s draw moved them up to 16th, but only a point separates them from the relegation zone.

Iraola looks beyond Leeds’ reach from the look of things, and they have to quickly move on to other targets.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot is also on their radar, and more targets could emerge.
