James Tarkowski made the difference for Everton on Saturday as they stunned Arsenal with a brilliant 1-0 victory.
The Toffees were winless in the top-flight since their 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace way back in October.
No one would have backed them for success this weekend, with the Gunners in spectacular form ahead of the Premier League clash.
However, Sean Dyche’s side defied expectations and frustrated their opponents with an impressive defensive display.
In the 60th minute, Tarkowski headed home Dwight McNeil’s cross to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Mikel Arteta’s side desperately tried to get back in the game, but the Toffees held out for a super home victory.
Tarkowski later hailed the Everton fans for creating such a great atmosphere and claimed the victory could be a turning point for them.
He told BT Sport (h/t the Guardian): What an atmosphere. Fair play to the fans. There have been tough times.
“A change of management, but we’ve bought into it straight away. Hopefully, this is the turning point. We’ve got to get our heads down and crack on.”
Victory is a big boost for Everton
The Merseyside club endured a disappointing January transfer window after failing to add a single player to the ranks.
They tried to sign several top players, but joining a relegation-threatened side was unappealing.
However, Everton have received a big boost after stunning Arsenal with a superb victory.
The success will serve to increase the confidence of the players as they battle to stay in the Premier League.
It will also lift the spirits of the fans who haven’t had anything to cheer about in recent months.
