Southampton close to signing Genk striker Paul Onuachu for €21m

Genk striker Paul Onuachu is close to joining Southampton, according to The Athletic.

The Saints have had a €21 million bid accepted by the Jupiler Pro League club.

The Nigerian international wants to join Southampton and is set to become their fourth signing this month.

The south coast club are bottom of the Premier League after 20 games, and Onuachu’s arrival would come in handy.

They have scored 17 goals this term and need to do more to stay up.

Onuachu has notched 16 goals in 19 league games this term and is the current top scorer in the Belgian top flight.

He scored 19 goals in 29 league games last term, and his return of 33 goals in 38 league matches in 2020-21 was astonishing.

The former FC Midtjylland star is a proven goalscorer, and that is precisely what Southampton need.

His imminent arrival could see Everton swoop in on Che Adams in the coming hours.

The Toffees want the Scotland international, but the Saints are not keen on losing him.

However, signing Onuachu could change all that, with Adams likely to play second fiddle to the Genk ace if he stays.

The 6ft 7ins Nigerian will become the tallest player in the Premier League. Onuachu’s aerial prowess will be an added advantage for Southampton.

However, they need him to hit the ground running and start firing on all cylinders immediately.

The African hitman has dreamt of playing in the English top flight, and he will be eager to prove himself.
