Referees’ chiefs claim Liverpool’s Fabinho should have been dismissed for his tackle on Evan Ferguson

Referees’ chiefs have admitted that Fabinho should have received a red card for his tackle on Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson during the FA Cup match on Sunday, according to The Times.

It was a nasty challenge from the Brazilian, but he only received a yellow card from the referee. The decision was not overruled by VAR.

Immediately after making the challenge, Fabinho thought he was in big trouble. However, he escaped punishment to everyone’s surprise.

Ferguson was subsequently substituted and he was later seen leaving the Amex Stadium on crutches.

However, the Seagulls ultimately emerged victorious to knock their opponents out of the FA Cup as Kaoru Mitoma popped up with the winning goal in stoppage time.

A let-off for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been going through a challenging period. They are miles off the pace in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions.

The Reds already have Virgil van Dijk, Arthur, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino sidelined with injury issues.

Losing Fabinho for three matches would have been a big blow for Liverpool.

The 29-year-old has been a vital member of the team this season, making 28 appearances across all competitions.

The decision not to dismiss him against Brighton was undoubtedly a let-off for the underachieving Merseyside outfit.
