AC Milan have released a statement denying the rumours that contract talks with forward Rafael Leao had collapsed.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reported earlier today that the talks between Rossoneri and Leao fell apart, casting a shadow over the Portuguese forward’s future at San Siro.
However, Milan have deemed those reports as fake, insisting that the negotiations are proceeding professionally.
Milan’s statement read: “With regard to the article published today by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport entitled: ‘Leão-Milan total rupture’, AC Milan would like to point out that the negotiations with Rafael Leão have not been interrupted.
“The journalistic narrative of a cold relationship between the two parties is not only totally unfounded but also damaging to the club and its player. AC Milan continues its dialogue with Leão and his entourage in a serene and professional way.”
Leao’s future continues to be a subject of intense speculation as Milan have been locked in talks with him for several months.
The Rossoneri have struggled to find a breakthrough, but they remain persistent on tying Leao to a new deal, with his current one expiring in 2024.
Wages are what separate both parties from reaching an agreement. As of now, Milan have tabled an offer worth around €7.5 million per season including bonuses, which still hasn’t convinced Leao.
The former Lille star is demanding astronomical wages, while Rossoneri are keen not to be held to ransom.
The 23-year-old has been a valuable asset to the Rossoneri, who he helped win the Scudetto last season after nearly a decade. He was also named Serie A’s MVP.
Leao is Milan’s top scorer in Serie A this season with eight goals despite the club’s disastrous form since after the World Cup.
