Leeds United have announced the arrival of Weston McKennie from Serie A giants Juventus.
The Lilywhites have fended off competition from Nottingham Forest and Fulham, with Jesse Marsch keen on linking up with his compatriot.
McKennie becomes the third player to join Leeds this month. They have snapped up Maximilian Wober from Red Bull Salzburg and Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim.
Leeds are just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, and Marsch will be hoping his recent additions can play a major role in improving the club’s standing in the second half of the season.
The Whites reached an agreement with the Bianconeri on a loan deal that will cost them £1.2 million, but they also retain the option of making the move permanent for €33m next summer.
The 24-year-old will link up with his international teammates Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson at Elland Road. The trio played together at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, helping their country reach the last 16.
Leeds director of football Victor Orta praised McKennie’s addition and backed the USMNT player to strengthen the squad.
“I am really happy – I think it is a good addition for Leeds United,” Orta stated.
“He is a player who is at international level, which is really helpful for the squad and someone who will strengthen us.
“I think it gives Jesse Marsch balance in his team and more options, with a player who can grow within the transition of English football.
“We hope he can adapt quickly with the rhythm here after playing in Italy. To have Weston on loan with an option to buy is a really good situation for Leeds United.”
While McKennie could prove a shrewd acquisition for the Whites, his permanent stay at Elland Road will depend on the club retaining top-flight status.
Leeds need a positive result when they take on Forest at the City Ground on Sunday in a game where McKennie could make his debut.
