Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo set to join Bayern Munich on loan

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo is close to joining Bayern Munich on loan, according to The Athletic

The 28-year-old has been an important member of Pep Guardiola’s team this season, featuring in 17 Premier League matches.

However, he recently fell out of favour at the Etihad Stadium after failing to start any of their last three games in all competitions.

The Cityzens are now reportedly prepared to sanction a loan move for the Portuguese footballer.

According to the Daily Mail, his relationship with Guardiola has deteriorated in recent weeks. He reportedly had heated chats with his manager about his lack of game time.

This has led to City sanctioning a loan move for the Portugal international to Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga giants will also have the option to sign him permanently for £61 million at the end of the season.

Cancelo exit is a surprise

Manchester City splashed out a huge fee to sign Cancelo in 2019.

He has subsequently made over 150 senior appearances, netting ten goals.

The Portugal international also played a key role last season to help his side win the Premier League title, featuring in 36 league games.

He has struggled to perform well this season and has fallen down the pecking order.

Despite the deterioration of his relationship with Guardiola, it is still surprising they are allowing him to leave on loan.

Cancelo has averaged 1.7 tackles and 1.1 interceptions this season. He also made three goal contributions while boasting over 86 percent passing accuracy (as per WhoScored).

City could sign another right-back as they have been linked with a move for Arnau Martinez. But they face competition from Barcelona for the player.
