Amadou Onana turns down transfer to Chelsea

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has reportedly rejected a move to Chelsea, according to Foot Mercato.

Chelsea have made six signings in January but are still in the market for a midfielder. The Blues see Onana as a cheaper alternative to other targets.

They want Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez, although the Portuguese club have refused to sell for below his £106 million release clause.

The Blues also approached Brighton & Hove Albion for Moises Caicedo but are unwilling to pay the £80m asking price.

Chelsea turned to Onana but he has rejected them in favour of helping Everton avoid relegation.

Onana is also a subject of a potential bid from Arsenal who are aware that Everton must raise money from player sales to avoid FIFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) sanctions.

However, the Gunners know that if Everton are relegated, he could be available for a lower fee.

The Belgian international joined Everton from LOSC Lille last summer. He has stood out for the struggling Toffees.

Onana made his international debut for Belgium in a Nations League match against the Netherlands in June 2022. He was part of the Belgian squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Having spent barely six months in Merseyside, the 21-year-old is not keen on a move.

Onana has shown he is loyal and ready to fight for the badge to help Everton avoid relegation. Other Everton stars such as Anthony Gordon could take a cue from him.
