Chelsea could return with another offer for Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Benfica star Enzo Fernandez in recent weeks.

The Blues are looking to strengthen their midfield ranks this month and believe the 21-year-old is a perfect fit for their needs.

However, their first offer was rejected by the Portuguese outfit who wanted the full £106 million release clause paid up front.

Chelsea were willing to spend more than that figure but wanted the payment in instalments to avoid financial fair play restrictions.

Despite seeing their initial bid rejected, the Premier League giants could still return to the table with another offer.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have not ruled out making a second bid for Fernandez.

They also have their sights on Brighton & Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo this month.

The Premier League transfers list shows the west London club have already signed Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Joao Felix in January.

Fernandez is a world-class player

Fernandez looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.

He played a key role in helping Argentina win the World Cup, starting five matches including the final against France.

Fernandez has also been impressive in Portugal since joining Benfica in June last year. He has made 14 league appearances, scoring a goal and contributing three assists.

The central midfielder has proved his abilities on the greatest stage in football and would be a superb signing for Chelsea.

However, Benfica’s demands look set to scupper the deal and a January move to Stamford Bridge is highly unlikely.
