Chelsea have completed a deal to sign Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season.
They have paid €11 million to Los Colchoneros and will cover Felix’s wages for the loan duration.
Felix fell out with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and decided to leave in January. He will now hope to fulfil the potential he showed while in Portugal.
He said (via the club’s website): “Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world, and I hope to help the team reach their objectives, so I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge.”
Felix broke through from the Benfica B team into the first team ahead of the 2018/2019 season.
He netted 15 goals in the Primeira Liga, assisted seven more (12 big chances created) and played 1.1 key passes per game.
Felix scored three more in the Europa League, assisting one. He also scored and assisted in the Taca de Portugal, helping them win the Primeira Liga.
Atletico came calling that summer for Felix to replace Antoine Griezmann, who was joining Barcelona.
Life has not been easy for Felix in Spain. He has produced sporadic moments of brilliance, but his time with the club has been largely underwhelming.
Diego Simeone’s defensive system and lack of trust in the Portugal international have not helped. Neither have niggling injuries.
He has netted just five goals and three assists this term, with Alvaro Morata and Griezmann ahead of him in the pecking order.
However, this loan move is a chance for him to reinvigorate himself at a club desperate for creativity.
Chelsea manager Graham Potter will hope he can help dig the club out of the mess it is in. The west London club have not won in their last seven games.
