FFF to meet with Didier Deschamps over new contract

The French Football Federation (FFF) will meet with Didier Deschamps over extending his contract as head coach, according to RMC Sport.

FFF boss Noel La Graet said he wants to meet with Deschamps as soon as possible. They will sit down to discuss Deschamps’ future and what is next for Les Bleus.

The pair had reached an agreement before the 2022 FIFA World Cup. If Les Bleus failed to reach the semi-final of the World Cup, then La Graet would be the one to decide Deschamps’ future. The ball would be in Deschamps’ court if France reached the semi-final.

Deschamps did one better and reached the final against Argentina, where they lost on penalties. They came back from deficits twice in the game to take the tie to penalties. But Argentine keeper Emiliano Martinez is a top penalty-stopper and helped his side win the title.

Despite the loss, France can leave with their heads held high. Deschamps’ subs, Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani, changed the game for Les Bleus.

The pair wrestled and won important duels for their nation. Kolo Muani won the first penalty that helped France pull one back. Eduardo Camavinga also helped take control in midfield from Argentina’s trio.

Deschamps has a crop of present and future superstars. Apart from Olivier Giroud (36), Antoine Griezmann (31) and Hugo Lloris (35), many players that went for the current World Cup will likely be eligible for the next one.

Deschamps wants to continue with the French national team. Multiple reports suggest the 54-year-old has no interest in club football.

For now, the Nations League champions will have to lick their wounds and return to club football. They will reassemble when the 2024 European Championship qualifiers begin in March 2023.

France will begin their journey to Germany for Euro 2024 by welcoming the Netherlands on March 24, 2023. Three days later, they face Ireland.

Other members of their group include Gibraltar and 2004 champions Greece.
