Romelu Lukaku suffers injury ahead of 2022 World Cup

Romelu Lukaku of FC Internazionale Romelu Lukaku of FC Internazionale acknowledges fans after the final whistle of the UEFA Champions League group C match between FC Internazionale and Viktoria Plzen at San Siro Stadium on October 26, 2022 in Milan, Italy

Inter Milan have confirmed that Romelu Lukaku has suffered a new injury and will miss the club’s next two games.

Lukaku has been ruled out of the Champions League tie against Bayern Munich and the Serie A game against Juventus this weekend.

He could also miss the 2022 World Cup, which starts in three weeks. The club has not done extensive tests, so they cannot determine the full extent of his latest injury.

The first set of tests showed that he has a scar on the hamstring of his left thigh caused by stepping up the intensity of his training. Lukaku will not play for Inter until at least 2023.

A club statement read via the club’s official website: “This morning, Romelu Lukaku underwent tests at the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano.

“They revealed that the Belgian suffered a myotendinous strain in his left hamstring. His condition will be reassessed in a few days.”

Lukaku just returned from a thigh injury after over a month out of action. He has only played 256 minutes since his return to Italy from Chelsea this summer.

He made his return against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League and helped Inter to a 4-0 win.

The Belgian international came on late in the half but got on the scoresheet to mark his return. Lukaku also made another substitute appearance for the Nerazzurri as they defeated Sampdoria last weekend.

His latest setback could prevent him from going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which begins in three weeks.

Lukaku is Belgium’s top goalscorer and the team’s talisman. Roberto Martinez will be hoping the former Everton striker recovers in time for the tournament even if he does not get game time for Inter.
