La Liga giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid knocked out of Champions League

La Liga powerhouses Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are officially out of this season’s Champions League after exiting at the group stage.

Barca knew their fate even before the kick-off against Bayern Munich. Inter Milan defeated Viktoria Plzen 4-0 earlier the night to book their place in the round of 16 alongside the Bundesliga giants.

The disappointment reflected on the pitch as the Catalan giants succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against Bayern, who extended their winning run to five games in the group stage.

The Blaugrana will be playing in Europa League for the second consecutive season.

Elsewhere, Atletico were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen in a thrilling game at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Los Rojiblancos had a win in their sights after a penalty was awarded to them in the dying minutes of injury time.

However, Yannick Carrasco, who was involved in both goals, failed to convert from the spot.

With FC Porto picking up a thumping 4-0 win against Club Brugge in Group B, Atletico and Leverkusen have been shown the exit door from the group stage.

Both sides will battle for the Europa League spot on the final matchday next week.

With Sevilla also failing to qualify for the next round, defending champions Real Madrid are the only Spanish team remaining in the tournament.

Los Blancos have secured the passage to the knockout stage as they currently top Group F with 10 points.

The 2022/23 UCL campaign has been full of surprises, with Italian giants Juventus exiting the group stage and Tottenham Hotspur’s chances hanging in the balance after the 1-1 draw against Sporting CP.
