Atalanta vs Lazio Preview – Prediction, how to watch & potential line-ups

Sunday’s top-five Serie A six-pointer, which takes place at the Gewiss Stadium, sees second-placed Atalanta take on high-flying Lazio.

La Dea painted their 115th birthday with flying colours, claiming a 2-1 home win over Sassuolo last time out to keep up with pacesetters Napoli.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have enjoyed a sensational league start following last season’s dreadful eighth-place finish, going unbeaten in all ten Serie A matches to this point (W7, D3).

With table-topping Napoli only two points clear ahead of their daunting trip to Roma, Atalanta could seize control of the top spot should they beat Lazio here.

Gasperini will again turn to his deadly duo Ademola Lookman and Teun Koopmeiners to come up with the goods, with the two in-form stars contributing to 62.5% of his side’s Serie A goals this season (10/16).

Lookman, who has scored in his last three league appearances, could be the key to unlocking Lazio’s airtight backline that has conceded in five successive top-flight outings (W4, D1).

Last weekend’s dull 0-0 home draw with fellow top-four hopefuls Udinese knocked the Biancocelesti down from a four-game winning streak in Serie A, leaving them in fifth ahead of this round.

However, a coveted fourth place, currently occupied by Roma, is well within reach, with Maurizio Sarri’s team trailing their city rivals by a single point.

And with Roma set to take on a relentless Napoli side at the Stadio Olimpico, Lazio are aware they could finish matchday 11 inside the top four should results go their way.

Match Preview

Atalanta’s come-from-behind home triumph over Sassuolo last weekend made it three wins in four Serie A matches for Gasperini’s Scudetto-bidding crew, setting them up nicely for this encounter.

Despite averaging only 1.6 goals per home league game this season, the hosts have won three of their five top-flight outings in Bergamo (D2), though all of those triumphs came against sides ranked 10th or worse.

Another positive result at home is on the cards, as Atalanta have suffered just one defeat in their last ten meetings with Lazio in Serie A (W4, D5), going down 3-1 at this stadium in January 2021.

For years, Lazio have been prone to giving away cheap goals and conceding aplenty, but Sarri has tightened up his defence this season, leading to his side’s best defensive top-flight start in the 21st century.

The Biancocelesti have shipped just five goals in the opening ten Serie A rounds, keeping seven clean sheets in the process, and could register six shutouts on the trot for the first time since 1998.

Lazio may have to put on another resilient defensive performance if they’re to extend their three-match unbeaten league run against Atalanta (W2, D1) and get back to winning ways.
