Newcastle United vs Everton Preview – Prediction, how to watch & potential line-ups

Newcastle United vs Everton Match Preview

In-form Newcastle United will trade tackles with Everton as both sides look to return to winning ways in Wednesday night’s Premier League showdown at St James’ Park.

After impressive 4-1 and 5-1 victories over Fulham and Brentford respectively, the Magpies held Erik ten Hag’s toothless Manchester United side to a thrilling yet scoreless draw at Old Trafford.

The game could have gone either way, but both sides lacked a cutting edge in the final third. The draw sees Newcastle remain in sixth place, one point behind last weekend’s hosts and four behind fourth-placed Chelsea, having played one more game.

After conceding just nine goals in ten league games, Eddie Howe’s side now boast the league’s best defensive record – a title once held by Wednesday’s visitors.

The Magpies are also unbeaten at St James’ Park, having won two and drawn three of their five home games. They have scored 11 goals and conceded just five in that run.

Newcastle have proven a tough nut to crack this season, having lost just once in the league. They will be keen to claim maximum points against Everton, who they have beaten in three of their last four encounters.

Everton enjoyed a six-game unbeaten league run between the end of August and the beginning of October. But it was always going to be short-lived, and Man United ended it with a 2-1 victory before Tottenham Hotspur recorded a 2-0 win last weekend.

Goals from the in-form Harry Kane and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg condemned Frank Lampard’s side to their fourth defeat of the season, leaving them closer to the relegation zone.

The Toffees sit four places above the drop zone but are just two points away from 18th-placed Southampton, and a third defeat on the trot could be detrimental to their survival aspirations.

However, with a run of five fixtures against teams outside the so-called top six leading up to the World Cup, Everton will be confident of steering themselves away from danger in the coming weeks.

Match Preview

Newcastle United

Newcastle have a strong record on home territory. They have lost just one of their last 15 top-flight games at St James’ Park (W9, D5), and securing at least a point on Wednesday will see them remain unbeaten in their first six home games of a season for the first time since 2011/12.

Howe’s side have also lost just one of their last 12 league games (W5, D6), with that defeat coming courtesy of a stoppage-time strike against Liverpool in August.

The Magpies have a strong scoring record to date, as only Brentford have scored more goals than Howe’s side of any team outside the traditional top six.

They also run a tight ship at the back as their record of four league shutouts, three of which have come in goalless draws, is only bettered by Manchester City this season (5).

With record signing Alexander Isak out injured, Callum Wilson has been tasked with leading the line. The former Bournemouth striker has scored six goals in his last four league games against Everton and will relish another goal against the shaky Toffees.

Everton’s unbeaten run was characterised by their ability to avoid losing rather than winning matches, as they managed only two wins in their six-game run (D4).

Their form in front of goal has also been a cause for worry, as they have netted just eight times so far. Only Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest have scored fewer goals, all of whom are behind the Toffees in the league standings.

Everton’s away form also leaves little to be desired as they have lost 15 times on the road since the start of last season, more than any other Premier League team. They are also winless in their last six midweek away games in the league (D4 L2).

Wednesday’s hosts will prove a strong test of character for the Toffees as they have won just two of their last eight meetings with Newcastle (D2, L4).

However, they were able to claim maximum points from their last clash with the Magpies, a slender 1-0 home triumph in March courtesy of a dramatic 99th-minute winner from Alex Iwobi.

Newcastle United vs Everton Prediction

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last five games. Although they have recorded more draws than wins in that run, they will head into Wednesday’s fixture as favourites.

The Toffees have seen their defence breached by superior quality over their last two games, so we expect Newcastle to continue that trend despite the absence of Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin.
