El Clasico was the headline act on Matchday 9, and Real Madrid picked up a comprehensive win over Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Real Betis were also among the winning sides.
Let’s look at the summary of results on matchday nine of La Liga
Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona: Ancelotti’s men batter dispirited Barcelona
Madrid had a joyous Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu after drubbing their rivals Barcelona 3-1 in El Clasico.
The Catalans were put on the back foot after goals from Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde in the first half.
Barca had some hope left after Ferran Torres halved the deficit in the 83rd minute, but it was soon buried by Rodrygo, who netted the third goal for the hosts from the penalty spot.
Los Blancos have reclaimed the top spot with the victory, while the poor run of form in recent weeks continues for Xavi’s men.
Athletic Bilbao 0 – 1 Atletico Madrid: Griezmann scores in a narrow win over the Lions
Antoine Griezmann’s strike in the second half helped Atletico Madrid secure a narrow win against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.
Alvaro Morata had a goal ruled out by VAR earlier in the game for a foul in the build-up, and the Spaniard redeemed it by setting up Griezmann’s strike.
Atletico were living on the edge in the second half due to Bilbao’s continued pressure to find the equaliser.
However, Jan Oblak was a rock between the sticks as he made some crucial saves to help his side see off the game.
Ernesto Valverde’s side have dropped points for the second game in a row despite an exhilarating start to the season.
Atletico must be feeling relieved after their disappointing draw against Club Brugge in the Champions League midweek.
Mallorca 0-1 Sevilla: Sampaoli’s men end winless run
Sevilla ended their six-match winless run with a 1-0 win against Mallorca.
Nemanja Gudelj’s superb long-range effort in the second half helped Rojiblancos pick up their second win in La Liga this season.
However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Jorge Sampaoli’s side, as goalkeeper Bono had to make a string of good saves to secure three points.
Celta Vigo 1-2 Real Sociedad: La Real continue their impressive winning run
Real Sociedad defeated Celta Vigo 2-1 away in La Liga to extend their winning run to seven games in all competitions.
La Real have moved to fifth in the table while Celta have suffered back-to-back defeats.
Real Betis 3-1 Almeria: Carvalho and Borja Iglesias shine in a thumping win
Coming straight off the 1-1 draw against AS Roma in Europa League, Real Betis secured a comprehensive 3-1 against Almeria, which also saw them move to the fourth spot.
The pressure was piling on Manuel Pellegrini after being winless in the last two league games before William Carvalho and Borja Iglesias rose to the occasion last night to ensure three points for the hosts.
Valencia 2-2 Elche: Cavani’s brace goes in vain
Valencia were held to a 2-2 draw by Elche at Mestalla Stadium.
Edison Cavani scored his first-ever goal for Los Che from the penalty spot before adding another one shortly, but his efforts went in vain as the game ended in a draw.
Other results
Espanyol ended their rough patch with a narrow 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid.
The games between Rayo Vallecano and Getafe and Girona and Cadiz also ended in draws.
