Rangers vs Liverpool Preview – Prediction, how to watch & potential line-ups

Out-of-sorts Liverpool take a trip to Ibrox Stadium to face Champions League Group A whipping boys Rangers, looking to return to winning ways following another domestic collapse at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s underperforming side hit back twice but eventually found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline at Arsenal on Sunday as their form woes continue to trouble the Merseyside faithful.

Liverpool’s see-saw form in the Premier League has seen them pick up just two wins from the opening eight matches (D4, L2), but things are looking slightly better in Europe.

Following a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Napoli in their curtain-raising Group A fixture, the Reds have strung together successive Champions League wins, including a 2-0 beating of Rangers last weekend.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side did well to bounce back from an underwhelming night at Anfield, hammering fellow Scottish Premiership rivals St. Mirren 4-0 on Saturday.

While Ibrox has witnessed countless magical European evenings, a dark cloud is following the Gers in the Champions League this season as they’ve yet to find the net in Group A.

After losing their opening three group games without scoring, Rangers would wave goodbye to their hopes of reaching the knock-outs unless they pull off an upset against a vulnerable Liverpool side.

Match Preview

Rangers

Though the abovementioned demolition of St. Mirren may hand Rangers a much-needed confidence boost, it’s hard to overlook their disastrous five-match scoreless run against English opposition (D1, L4).

Back to the Champions League for the first time since 2010/11, the Gers cannot rely much on their recent fortunes in Europe’s top club competition, having failed to score in eight of their last 11 fixtures.

Despite often defending their fortress in Glasgow, Rangers have suffered a lot at Ibrox lately, suffering six defeats across their last eight Champions League home encounters (W1, D1).

Liverpool

With third-placed Ajax only three points behind at the halfway stage of Group A, Liverpool’s progression into the Champions League knock-outs is far from a foregone conclusion.

All too aware of their ongoing form issues, the Reds will be out to defy a mixed seven-game European record against Scottish adversaries (W3, D2, L2) and regain some confidence.

Klopp’s men can draw inspiration from their free-scoring run in the Champions League group phase, having netted in 19 of their last 20 outings at this juncture.

Rangers vs Liverpool Prediction

Though Rangers should present Liverpool with a much sterner test than at Anfield last week, we expect the Reds to take home all three points.

Despite the visitors’ defensive frailties, intimidating firepower at Klopp’s disposal should make the difference.
