Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool need to reinvent themselves after heavy Champions League defeat

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool must reinvent themselves after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League last night. 

The Blues completely dominated their opponents at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and the result never looked in doubt from the moment they opened the scoring.

The visitors were woeful in defence and Luciano Spalletti’s side took full advantage. 

Piotr Zielinski grabbed the opener from the penalty spot in the fifth minute before Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa added another by slotting the ball low past Alisson Becker. 

Giovanni Simeone left the bench just before the interval to turn home Kvaratskhelia’s excellent cross to compound the Reds’ misery. 

If Liverpool fans were hoping for a comeback in the second half, they were left disappointed as Zielinski found the back of the net just two minutes after the break. 

Luis Diaz pulled one back for the Premier League giants but there was no way back for them in the game by that point. 

German boss Klopp told BT Sport that the Reds need major changes to turn things around. 

“We played bad in the first half but usually we don’t concede three goals,” he said.

“With Alisson in goal, you have to be really bad for that to happen. We played here when we lost 2-0 (in 2019) and that was an awful game. It looks like we have to reinvent ourselves. There are a lot of things lacking.”

The latest defeat means that Liverpool have won only two of their seven matches across all competitions this season. 

They were close to winning an unprecedented quadruple of trophies last term but their levels have massively dropped this season. 

Injuries have played their part, with several key players currently on the treatment table. However, that is still not a good excuse for such a disappointing performance. 

The Merseyside club have no time to feel sorry for themselves as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.
