Europa League Group F Preview
In his first season in the Italian capital, Maurizio Sarri guided Lazio to fifth in the Serie A table, finishing just six points behind Juventus to secure a place in Pot 1 for the draw for the 2022/23 Europa League.
There were plenty of strong clubs in Pot 2, and the Biancocelesti managed to be grouped with one of them in Dutch side Feyenoord.
Sturm and Midtjylland will complete Group C and should not provide too much difficulty for the two favourites in the group.
Lazio progressed to the competition’s round of 16 last season. With the additions of Alessio Romagnoli, Nicolò Casale, and Matías Vecino, they will try to go even further in the knockout stage.
Feyenoord narrowly missed out on winning the Europa Conference League in the inaugural final last season after an impressive but unexpected European run.
The Rotterdam-based club may have lost several key players this summer in Luis Sinisterra, Cyriel Dessers, Guus Til and Tyrell Malacia, but they have brought in several young players with a point to prove.
Midtjylland missed out on last year’s knockout stage by a two-point margin and then lost the Danish Championship by three points months later.
Sturm failed to win any of their group stage matches last season, and the Austrian club seem destined to finish at the bottom of their group again.
Group F will likely be decided in the final group match days as Lazio will play both games against Midtjylland in October before ending with a visit to Rotterdam.
If Lazio choose to prioritise their efforts towards achieving a top-four finish over their European run, we could very much see an upset in Feyenoord and Midtjylland finishing above them.
