Barcelona target Meunier after missing out on Azpilicueta and Foyth

Thomas Meunier on the ball for Borussia Dortmund

Barcelona are targeting Borussia Dortmund’s right-back Thomas Meunier after missing out on Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Foyth, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The La Liga giants targeted Meunier during the January transfer window, and they have resumed talks to try and sign him this summer.

Barcelona have resumed contact with the player’s agent as they look to complete a deal for the player as soon as possible with only a few days left in the window. They hope to sign him for less than Dortmund’s €15 million valuation.

They are keen to add to their right-back options, and the Belgian defender is their new number one target for the position.

Barcelona’s primary target heading into the summer was Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spanish full-back was also keen on joining the Catalans.

However, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel blocked a move for the 33-year-old club captain.

The Blues had already lost two members of their Champions League-winning backline, and the German manager was wary of shedding more experience.

Chelsea convinced Azpilicueta to sign a two-year extension with the club, killing any chance of a transfer.

Barcelona immediately moved on to Villarreal’s Juan Foyth as their next target. The Argentine centre-back has been playing as a makeshift right-back for Unai Emery.

They were priced out of a move for the former Tottenham Hotspur defender. Villarreal demanded €30m for Foyth, so Barcelona pulled out of the transfer.

Hector Bellerin was offered to Barcelona, and while they appreciate his more offensive profile, Meunier is next on their target list.

Barcelona will now try to bring in Meunier before the close of the window on Thursday. The 30-year-old is open to leaving Germany because he does not have a good relationship with Edin Terzic.

The Catalans will have to sell before they can sign a new player. Their move for Marcos Alonso has stalled because they have not sold players.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frenkie De Jong, Martin Braithwaite, Serginio Dest and Memphis Depay all have unresolved futures.

Barcelona will need to sell some of them to be able to sign and register new players.
