Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi is one step away from joining Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues academy graduate has not been the same since he ruptured his Achilles in 2019, which kept him out for several months.
He has struggled with multiple recurring injury problems since then, which has contributed to his lack of game time under Thomas Tuchel.
Despite claiming that he is back to 100 percent and ready to go during Chelsea’s pre-season tour, the 21-year-old is yet to earn the trust of his manager this season.
He did not make the squad that travelled to Goodison Park in the 1-0 victory over Everton on opening day and has settled for a place on the bench in the Blues’ subsequent three league games.
Desperate for regular first-team action, the young Englishman clamoured for a move away from Stamford Bridge, but Todd Boehly was only willing to sanction a loan deal.
The England U21 star will travel to Germany later today to undergo medical examinations and sign his contract to join the Bundesliga club.
The deal was in danger of collapsing with Leverkusen insisting on a buy-option, but Chelsea were adamant on a simple loan, hoping Hudson-Odoi would regain his form and get back to his very best.
The youngster has made 126 appearances for the Blues since graduating from the club academy, contributing 16 goals and 22 assists.
Leverkusen were not alone in the race for the Chelsea forward, with several other clubs registering an interest, including Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United, Southampton and Leicester City.
A loan move benefits both Chelsea and the player as it will allow him to feature regularly and try to shrug off his injury problems and regain his form.
The Bundesliga side can also offer him the chance to showcase his talents in the Champions League.
