Everton in talks with Manchester United over a move for £14m midfielder

Everton are in talks with Manchester United over a move for James Garner, according to a report from The Athletic

The 21-year-old is an academy graduate of the Red Devils who progressed through its ranks to earn his senior debut in February 2019 at the age of 17.

Since then, he has struggled to break into the first team at Old Trafford and has mostly remained on loan with other clubs.

The England Under-21 international was at Nottingham Forest last season where he played a key role in helping them secure promotion from the Championship.

He made 41 league appearances for the Tricky Trees, scoring four goals and creating 10 assists.

The young midfielder returned to Old Trafford earlier this summer but he doesn’t look to be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans for the 2022-23 season.

Garner was an unused substitute in United’s first two matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. He wasn’t even part of the squad in the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday.

United are open to letting Garner leave the club for £14 million.

Everton are in discussions with them over a move. Southampton, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest.

The Toffees need reinforcements in midfield, with Fabian Delph and Gylfi Sigurdsson having already departed Goodison Park. Dele Alli is also close to making a move to Turkish club Besiktas.

Frank Lampard’s side have made a disappointing start to the 2022-23 campaign, losing matches against Chelsea and Aston Villa before drawing with Forest.
