Jamie Vardy pens new Leicester City contract

England international Jamie Vardy has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract with Leicester City.

The veteran forward, who turns 36 next January, has enjoyed a successful decade-long stint with the Foxes and has extended his stay at the King Power Stadium until the summer of 2024.

Speaking via the Leicester City official website, Vardy said: “I’m obviously over the moon.

“Once I heard it was something the club was looking at, there was only one thing that was going to happen, and I was going to sign it. The decision was easy.

“I’ve been here long enough now that I feel like part of the furniture. I think you can see with the way we’re trying to play, the way the Club’s wanting to go, that it’s going to be onwards and upwards.

“To carry on being involved with that, I was over the moon. Now it’s all about this season and finishing as high as we can.

“My legs are still feeling great so I’ll carry that on helping the Club as much as I can, whether that’s scoring or assisting, that’s what I’m here to do.”

Since joining from Fleetwood Town in 2012, Vardy has been a key figure for Leicester at the attacking end of the pitch.

The English striker netted an impressive 24 league goals in the 2015-16 campaign to help the Foxes defy the odds and clinch an unlikely Premier League title.

With less than 12 months remaining on his current deal, Vardy was linked with a move away from the east Midlands outfit, with Manchester United reportedly monitoring his situation.

According to Daily Mail, the Red Devils were considering a surprise move for the 35-year-old as they look to bolster their attacking options before the Premier League summer transfer window closes.

However, Vardy has ended speculation of a potential exit and committed his future to Leicester by signing a new contract.

Vardy has scored a club-record 163 goals and provided 49 assists in 380 appearances for Leicester since his arrival 10 years ago.

He became the oldest player to pick up the Premier League Golden Boot when he netted 23 goals to help Leicester secure a fifth-placed finish in the 2019-20 campaign.
