Napoli in advanced talks to sign Giovanni Simeone

Giovanni Simeone is close to joining Napoli from Hellas Verona

Napoli are in advanced talks with Hellas Verona to sign striker Giovanni Simeone, according to Nicolo Schira.

He will join on for an initial loan fee of €3.5 million with an option to buy for €12m.

The 27-year-old is only beginning to deliver the results of the massive talent he showed when he emerged as a youngster.

Simeone finished as top scorer at the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship to announce himself to the world.

After a successful loan to Banfield, Genoa brought Simeone to Europe in 2016. He impressed again and got a move to Fiorentina the following summer.

His first season in Florence was great before he suffered a second-season slump. He moved to Cagliari on loan. Again he started well before his performances began to dwindle.

After a topsy-turvy spell with Cagliari, Simeone moved to Verona on a season-long loan for the 2021/22 season.

He scored 17 goals and assisted six more in 35 appearances for the club to help them finish ninth in the league. Those are his best numbers to date.

He formed a lethal partnership with Gianluca Caprari in Igor Tudor’s 3-4-2-1. Simeone can play across the forward line and brings the sort of tactical versatility that will please Luciano Spalletti.

Napoli are trying to rebuild their squad this summer after a host of departures, and they have set their sights on Simeone after one of his best seasons.

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is eager to cover the holes in his team ahead of the upcoming Serie A campaign that begins this Saturday.

The Partenopei could make Simeone their fifth summer signing. They have brought in Leo Ostigard, Mathias Olivera, Kim Min-Jae and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

They are also pushing for Giacomo Raspadori and Keylor Navas.
