Everton’s Ben Godfrey could be out for months after suffering horrible injury against Chelsea

Everton star Ben Godfrey suffered a horrible injury against Chelsea on Saturday and he could now be out for months.

The 24-year-old twisted his ankle when he tried to tackle Kai Havertz just minutes into the Goodison Park encounter.

He later left the field on a stretcher after a lengthy delay, with manager Frank Lampard bringing on Mason Holgate to replace him.

Abdoulaye Doucoure conceded a penalty deep into first-half injury time and Jorginho easily slotted home from the spot.

With around 20 minutes remaining, Yerry Mina went to ground holding his ankle and was also forced to leave the field, with new signing Ruben Vinagre replacing him.

The Toffees lost the league opener 1-0 but Lampard will be more concerned with the injuries to his defenders.

A big blow

Godfrey was an important member of the squad last season when he made 23 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.

The 24-year-old averaged an impressive 2.0 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 4.0 clearances per game in the English top-flight.

Losing him so early in the campaign is a big blow for Everton who came extremely close to getting relegated last term.

To add to their troubles, Mina has also been sidelined due to an ankle injury. The Colombian is an outstanding defender but he is rarely available to play as he is very injury prone.

Last season, he missed an incredible 62 days due to a hamstring injury while his thigh problems kept him out for 39 days (as per Transfermarkt).

However, his stats have been very impressive in his career so far for both club and country, with the 27-year-old averaging 1.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game (as per WhoScored).
