Leicester City reject initial offer from Chelsea for Wesley Fofana

Leicester City have turned down an opening bid from Chelsea for the services of Wesley Fofana, according to L’Equipe.

The offer is believed to be worth around £62.8million and was immediately rejected by Leicester who remain firm on their stance not to sell and will hold out for a higher fee should they choose to part ways with their highly-prized asset.

Fofana has emerged as a top transfer target for Chelsea over the last couple of days as they seek to reinforce their options at the back following the departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Despite having signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keen on adding two more centre-backs ahead of his second full season at the helm of affairs.

Off the back of their unsuccessful pursuits of Nathan Ake, Matthijs de Ligt and Presnel Kimpembe, Chelsea have also been recently dealt blows in their quests to sign Jules Kounde and Josko Gvardiol with the former eventually joining Barcelona a few days after he was seemingly on his way to Stamford Bridge.

With the transfer window now four weeks away from its end, Chelsea are working towards snapping up Fofana despite the Frenchman only signing a contract extension at the King Power Stadium earlier this year.

Per CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs, Chelsea and Leicester are currently £20m apart in their valuation of the 21-year-old but the west Londoners are currently assessing whether to make an improved offer.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are thought to be closing in on the acquisition of Marc Cucurella from Brighton in a deal which would see Levi Colwill head the other way but the Seagulls have since denied reaching any agreement with the Blues.

As the 2022/23 Premier League season approaches, Chelsea know that they still have work to do in the transfer window if they are to muster up a proper title challenge against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
