Everton approach Paris Saint-Germain over former midfielder Idrissa Gueye

Everton have opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain to bring back former midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Senegalese player has had a topsy-turvy time in Paris, and the Toffees could bring him back to the Premier League.

The 32-year-old has a year left on his contract, and PSG may decide to cash in on the former Lille man.

Gueye joined PSG from Everton in 2019 after his impressive time at Goodison Park and initially ranked in the top echelons for tackles and interceptions.

After some tremendous early performances, including against Real Madrid in the Champions League, he began to struggle.

PSG, despite their star-studded attack and defence, did not have the quality in midfield to balance the team. Ander Herrera underwhelmed, as did Danilo and Gini Wijnaldum.

Marco Verratti is their only world-class midfielder, and he struggles with injuries.

Gueye enjoyed a reasonable 2021/22 campaign. He made 18 Ligue 1 starts and scored three goals while creating three big chances. He also scored one goal in the Champions League.

He has picked up two league titles with Les Parisiens and won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title with Senegal. He is a winner and has top-level experience, something Everton need right now.

A return to Everton would be great for Gueye. They require a ball-winner, and the defensive midfielder needs a change of environment.

With Luis Campos and Christophe Galtier gunning for young French talents, they might not think twice about selling Gueye.

While the move for Gueye is in its early stages, it would be no surprise to see him return to Goodison Park this summer.
