Liverpool consider summer move for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes

Liverpool are ready to open talks with Sporting CP over a potential move for Matheus Nunes, reports cmjornal.

Jurgen Klopp has previously stated that he is not scouring any midfielders this summer, with the Reds already spending €100 million for Darwin Nunez, in addition to the arrivals of talented youngsters Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay.

However, it looks as if the Reds are exploring a move for Nunes, who is considered among the talented midfielders in Europe.

Nunes also could be an alternative for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, whom the Reds have ruled out signing this summer owing to his expensive price tag.

The 23-year-old has been a key cog in Sporting’s midfield over the last two seasons, winning the Portuguese league title in the 2020/21 campaign.

Nunes, who has also earned eight senior caps with the Portuguese national team, has grabbed the attention of top European clubs due to his impressive form.

Manchester City have been credited with an interest, but they are unlikely to pursue Nunes after acquiring the services of Kalvin Phillips.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been showing heavy interest in the Sporting star as they look to increase their Portuguese contingent in the squad.

However, Sporting are demanding an unnegotiable €50m to part ways with Nunes, and it remains to be seen whether Liverpool would be ready to pay it.

The Reds have a reputation for shrewd transfer dealings, and they wouldn’t easily splurge on players unless there is an utmost need for them.

With midfield options stacked up, Liverpool don’t have the need to add another expensive player to their ranks.

Furthermore, they are expected to go all out for Bellingham next summer though there would be competition from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
