5 Premier League players Everton could take on loan this summer

Last season was a bit of a nightmare for Everton. They picked up their lowest points total in the Premier League era, and avoided relegation by just four points.

And what have they done to ensure that they’re not in the same position again next year? Erm…not a whole lot, so far. Their only new signing has been James Tarkowski on a free transfer from Burnley, while they let go of arguably their best player in Richarlison.

The Toffees’ pre-season results haven’t done much to inspire much confidence, either. They were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal, before getting hammered 4-0 by US side Minnesota United.

The new campaign is just two weeks away. They need to act quickly in the transfer window if they want to avoid another relegation battle. Here are five Premier League players they could take on loan.

Cole Palmer (Manchester City)

The Etihad Stadium is not an easy place for a youngster make his breakthrough. Right from the get-go, he is competing with world-class superstars, and big money is being spent every summer.

Cole Palmer is one of the academy products looking to make the grade at Manchester City. He has already made 11 senior appearances, scoring three goals. However, his chances of being a regular for the Cityzens next season are slim, so he may be best pursuing a loan move.

Primarily an attacking midfielder, Palmer is capable of playing as a striker. In both areas, Everton could do with an upgrade – Dele Alli is the club’s only natural attacking midfielder, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Salomon Rondon are their only senior strikers.

Everton fill some necessary gaps, Man City get a bit of money for a player that isn’t immediately needed, and Palmer gets some time on the pitch. It’s a deal that suits all parties.

Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)

Perhaps the Merseyside club would prefer someone a bit more proven. Having spent the last three seasons out on loan, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has shown that he is more than capable in the top-flight.

Last season, the 22-year-old really made a name for himself. He was one of the standouts in Patrick Vieira’s promising Crystal Palace side, scoring eight and assisting three. This form has earned him four caps for the England national team.

It’s unclear whether the midfielder will get many opportunities at Stamford Bridge in the coming season. The Blues already have the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Ross Barkley in the central midfield position.

Should he head out on loan again, Everton could be a good destination for him. Manager Frank Lampard will no doubt be able to pull some strings with his former employers.

Gallagher spent his playing time last season as an attacking midfielder and as a slightly deeper central midfielder. He would be a starter in both of these positions for the Toffees.

Japhet Tanganga (Tottenham)

The signings of Djed Spence and Clement Lenglet have pushed Japhet Tanganga further back in the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur. If he’s looking for regular game time, he would be best looking away from north London.

Only four sides conceded more goals than Everton last term. Of those four, Leeds United and Southampton have made several signings, while Norwich City and Watford were relegated.

If they’re looking for a versatile defender eager to prove himself, Tanganga could be the right man. Throughout his time at Spurs, he has lined up as a centre-back and on the right side of defence.

Axel Tuanzebe (Manchester United)

Another option at centre-back is Manchester United academy graduate Axel Tuanzebe. The England youth international is 24 now and is still struggling to get a look-in at Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, he has shown some promise in the past. He could be a fine addition to Everton’s ranks if he can start playing his best stuff. A loan with an option to buy seems like a deal that suits all involved.

Reiss Nelson (Arsenal)

Reiss Nelson’s pathway into the Arsenal first team hasn’t been the smoothest. Despite promising loan spells at Hoffenheim and Feyenoord, he still isn’t much closer to being a starter for the Gunners. That isn’t likely to change if he stays there next year, given that he has to compete with a number of the club’s top stars.

Should he move to Goodison Park, however, he could get minutes on the pitch. Anthony Gordon is expected to be one of Everton’s first-choice wingers, but the other side remains up for grabs. Alex Iwobi, Andros Townsend, and Demarai Gray will be the others competing for that spot.

Nelson is quick, a good dribbler, and able to play on either wing. Next season could be a huge one for him if he makes the right move.
