Pep Guardiola dismisses Neymar rumours but hints at new signings

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City will not be signing Neymar this summer.

Neymar arrived at Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017, signing for a world record fee of around £198 million from Barcelona. The Brazilian was expected to be the man to end the club’s hunt for European glory.

Five years on, his time in Paris has received mixed reviews. He has scored 100 goals in 144 appearances, and helped the club to nine major domestic trophies. However, this hasn’t been enough to convince his critics that he was worth the money.

This summer, there has been plenty of speculation over the 30-year-old’s future. New manager Christophe Galtier intends to keep him, but it is unclear whether he will remain at the Parc des Princes.

One place he will not be going to, however, is Manchester City. Cityzens boss Pep Guardiola has denied links to the forward.

As quoted by Manchester Evening News, the Catalan said: “I’m sorry for Le Parisien, but it’s not true.

“Their information is not right, Neymar is an incredible player and the information I have he’s an incredibly nice guy. But it’s not right.”

The English champions have suffered some damage during this transfer window, especially in wide areas. Gabriel Jesus was sold to Arsenal, while Raheem Sterling (one of Man City’s most expensive signings) made the switch to Chelsea. Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez have come in, but neither are direct replacements for the outgoing players.

This potentially leaves them a little bit light on the wings. Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez are expected to be the first choice options, while Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva can provide some cover.

But this may not be enough for a side looking to challenge on all four fronts next season. Silva spent most of last term as a central midfielder, while Grealish had a difficult debut campaign.

Guardiola refused to rule out the possibility of any new arrivals. Along with Haaland and Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips came in from Leeds United, and Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella is on their radar.

“We will see about signings” he continued. “Txiki [Begiristain] and his department are scouting. He’ll know what is best for the team.”
