Tottenham close to reaching total agreement for Djed Spence transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their sixth signing this summer as they are close to reaching an agreement with Middlesbrough over the transfer of Djed Spence.

The Athletic reports that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has stepped up the talks with the Boro and managed to find a breakthrough, with medical now a real possibility in the coming days.

Spence has emerged as a top target for the north Londoners, and it now appears that a deal is getting closer to completion.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a standout Championship campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest last term, racking up two goals and four assists in 42 appearances as well as helping them gain promotion to the Premier League.

European giants Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Arsenal were all credited with an interest, but the English U21 star is now seemingly headed to Tottenham.

Antonio Conte has enjoyed a productive transfer window, adding the likes of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet to the squad.

The Italian manager is expected to tick all the boxes with the addition of Spence, who will provide competition for Emerson Royal at the right-back/wing-back slot.

The Brazilian defender enjoyed a not-so-impressive campaign last term – only a goal and an assist in the Premier League – despite Spurs’ qualification to the Champions League.

Conte had heavily relied on his wing-backs in his previous managerial spells. Perhaps, he has also been highly successful whenever the wing-backs in his team perform at the top level, with a perfect instance being Achraf Hakimi, who was pivotal in Conte’s Inter Milan side during the Scudetto win in 2021.

Spurs are looking to push the boundaries next season and potentially challenge for the Premier League title – to a greater extent, Champions League – off the back of an impressive spending spree.
