Eredivisie giants Ajax are getting closer to getting their hands at top target Steven Bergwijn after reaching an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur.
Dutch journalist Mike Verweij reports that Ajax have managed to strike a deal with Spurs worth €30 million for Bergwijn, who will put pen to paper on a five-year contract.
The Dutch winger has failed to prove himself in the Premier League after his move from PSV Eindhoven in 2020.
Bergwijn also fell down the pecking order of Antonio Conte, who consistently preferred Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski in the forward line last season.
The 24-year-old also revealed his desire to leave the Lilywhites in search of regular game time during international duty with the Netherlands national team last month.
Bergwijn told ESPN (h/t Fabrizio Romano): “It’s difficult for me. I play well at the National Team but when I return to the club people turn a blind eye to me. I need to find a solution, so I could leave.”
Ajax have been working on the deal for some time now, and they will be relieved to see Tottenham accept their offer.
The reigning Eredivisie champions are set for a new era under new head coach Alfred Schreuder, who replaced Erik ten Hag.
Attacking reinforcements are a priority, with the likes of Sebastien Haller and Antony facing uncertain futures at Ajax.
The Dutch giants are also close to sealing a permanent transfer for Brian Brobbey from RB Leipzig, with the 20-year-old impressing on loan in Eredivisie last season.
Elsewhere, Spurs have confirmed the signing of Richarlison from Everton in a £60m deal, making him the most expensive player in the club’s history.
