Real Madrid reach ‘verbal agreement’ to sign Aurelien Tchouameni

Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Monaco to sign midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

According to The Athletic, the 22-year-old will join the European champions in a total package deal worth more than €100 million.

The clubs are in the process of finalising the paperwork, and the transfer will be officially announced when this is completed in the next few days.

Paris Saint-Germain were reportedly ready to offer more than Madrid for Tchouameni, while Liverpool were also interested in securing his services.

However, the France international was clear that he wanted to join the La Liga giants and refused to negotiate with any other clubs.

Tchouameni played a key role for Monaco as they finished third in Ligue 1 last season, contributing three goals and two assists in 35 appearances.

He netted his first international goal in a 2-1 friendly win over Ivory Coast earlier this year and was singled out for praise by Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps after the game.

His arrival at the Bernabeu Stadium will crank up the pressure on the club’s veteran midfield trio of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro.

They played an integral role in Madrid’s recent Champions League victory over Liverpool, but they are not getting any younger.

Tchouameni is likely to forge a midfield partnership with compatriot Eduardo Camavinga in the future as Madrid strive to keep their trophy bandwagon rolling.

Camavinga has been used in a more advanced role by Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, and he would dovetail perfectly with Tchouameni’s more defensive nature.

The pair may have to remain patient in the short term, with Modric expected to extend his stay in Madrid for at least another season.

Despite this, the French youngsters will be handed plenty of opportunities to shine as Madrid bid to defend their La Liga and Champions League titles next term.
