Arsenal make Memphis Depay enquiry

Arsenal have made an enquiry over the availability of Memphis Depay ahead of the upcoming transfer window, per Spanish outlet ABC Soccer.

Since the January arrivals of Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Depay has often found himself on the fringes of Barcelona’s starting XI.

While the Dutchman has not indicated that he wants to leave the La Liga giants yet, a move away could be on the cards as he seeks to feature on a more consistent basis.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi Hernandez’s men are considering using Depay as a makeweight in their pursuit of Robert Lewandowski with the Catalans not willing to fork out more than €35million for the Polish striker.

In a new development, Arsenal have now declared an interest in Depay, who is reportedly also wanted by West Ham United and Juventus.

The 28-year-old’s contract at the Camp Nou is due to expire in 2023 and Barca are seeking to cash in this summer having signed him as a free agent last year.

Mikel Arteta’s men are in need of added attacking firepower as Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette prepare to leave the Emirates Stadium when their respective contracts expire on June 30.

Gabriel Jesus is thought to be the Gunners’ number one target but they may have to look elsewhere in the wake of Monday’s damaging defeat to Newcastle United.

Arsenal currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and would need a miracle on the final day of the season to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2017.

As in the case of the aforementioned Jesus, a lack of Champions League football would make the prospect of a move to North London less exciting for Depay.

However, the ex-Lyon man could be open to a switch to England with a point to prove off the back of a disappointing stint with Manchester United.
