David de Gea set for new deal at Manchester United

Manchester United are prepared to reward David de Gea with a contract extension, according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano via UnitedStand MUFC.

The goalkeeper temporarily lost his No.1 spot to Dean Henderson during the last campaign but has since reclaimed his place in the starting XI.

In an otherwise turbulent and disappointing season for Ralf Rangnick’s men, de Gea has been a rare positive with his superb displays between the sticks behind a fragile defensive unit on a weekly basis.

Despite conceding a whopping 51 goals in 34 Premier League outings this term, only Ilan Meslier of Leeds United has made more saves than the Spaniard in the entire division.

Ahead of Erik ten Hag’s arrival, De Gea is one of the few names sure to be at Old Trafford going forward although ESPN recently claimed that there are concerns over his suitability for ten Hag’s system.

The 31-year-old is a leading candidate to pick up his side’s Player of the Season award for the fifth time since moving to the red half of Manchester.

United will reportedly extend de Gea’s current deal by 12 months, tying him down until 2024, while also maintaining his wages of £375,000 a week which is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo at the club.

With a squad overhaul expected this summer, keeping hold of a shot-stopper of de Gea’s ilk would represent a fantastic piece of business for United.

Off the back of a fifth consecutive campaign without silverware, the English giants are in need of a turnaround having fallen massively far behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

In the meantime, De Gea and United prepare for the visit of Chelsea on Thursday looking to maintain their already faint hopes of qualifying for the Champions League via a top-four finish.
