It was reported recently that the Gunners had turned their attention towards Sabitzer as an alternative for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who could cost around £100 million.
However, Los Rojiblancos have now joined the race for Sabitzer, whose debut season in Bundesliga hasn’t gone as planned.
The Austrian international completed a move to Allianz Arena from RB Leipzig last summer, thereby reuniting with his former gaffer Julian Nagelsmann.
However, Sabitzer never managed to convince Nagelsmman to be a starter, which is evident by his mere seven starts out of 22 games in the Bundesliga.
Having already fallen down the pecking order, Sabitzer’s future also looks bleak with the speculated arrival of highly-talented midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax.
The 28-year-old is said to be considering his future in order to revitalise his career, while the Bavarians are ready to offload him for around €15 million.
Atletico are looking to strengthen their midfield, with Hector Herrera leaving this summer to join MLS outfit Houston Dynamo while Saul is still on loan at Chelsea.
Koke, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Rodrigo de Paul and Thomas Lemar are the only options, but Diego Simeone needs more firepower in the middle of the park.
Sabitzer could be a great addition for Atletico, especially when he is available for an affordable price.
Los Rojiblancos would benefit greatly should they help Sabitzer replicate the impressive form he enjoyed at Leipzig over the last two seasons.
Moreover, his versatility to play as a central midfielder, No.10 and even a second striker would be an added advantage to Simeone.
