Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez emerges as a likely summer target for Barcelona

Barcelona could sign Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez this summer as the Argentine is searching for an apartment in the Catalonian capital, reports Spanish journalist Victor Malo.

The Catalan giants are linked with a flurry of defenders including Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta, but it appears Martinez could be the one heading towards Camp Nou.

Martinez has become a key cog in Ajax’s defence over the last three seasons, helping the Dutch giants win the Eredivisie title and KNVB Cup last season.

The 24-year-old has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season, and he is on course to win another league title.

Martinez has a contract running until 2025, but the prospective departure of Erik ten Hag to Manchester United leaves the defender’s future uncertain.

For his diminutive presence, Martinez makes up with his strong build, excellent distribution and passing abilities. He averages a pass success percentage of around 90, five long balls per game and wins three aerial duels per game. (Stats: WhoScored)

Barca are in the market for new defenders as they are likely to part ways with Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet this summer.

Veteran centre-back Gerard Pique has been playing his best football under Xavi, while Ronald Araujo is also earning plaudits for his impressive performances.

However, Eric Garcia has been inconsistent in the backline, and he received criticism for Barca’s back to back defeats against Eintracht Frankfurt and Cadiz.

The Spanish defender is excellent when it comes to the abilities on the ball but struggles off it.

Having already secured the free transfer of Andreas Christensen, Barca can further reinforce their defensive ranks with a highly-talented player like Martinez.
