Chelsea leading the race for £50m-rated Ligue 1 midfielder

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who is considered among the brightest talents in Europe.

Following his transfer from Bordeaux in 2020, the French youngster has grown into a top-class midfielder at Monaco, which led to his maiden international call-up last year while also winning the Nations League.

Tchouameni, 22, was key behind Monaco finishing third in Ligue 1 last season, while he has continued his impressive form this term as well.

The French youngster is on the wishlist of European giants Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester United, but a report from Sport Witness (h/t The Sun) suggests that the Blues are leading the race.

The West Londoners could seek midfield reinforcements in the summer due to Jorginho and N’Golo Kante’s slight dip in their performances.

Surprisingly, they have often looked out of sorts this season, and the best instance was in the Blues’ recent defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals first leg.

Although the duo’s incredible form was crucial behind Chelsea’s UCL triumph last year, both have struggled with fitness this season, which also impacted their performances.

Moreover, Mateo Kovacic remains the only consistent player, while Atletico loanee Saul Niguez and Ruben Loftus Cheek have been deprived of minutes.

It could serve as a stark reminder for Thomas Tuchel to bring in a new midfielder who can inject youth and quality into the squad.

Tchouameni fits the bill perfectly as he is defensively solid and brilliant in ball progression, but the only concern is his hefty £50 million price tag.

The Blues are currently restricted from doing any kind of transfer dealings due to the sanctions placed by the UK Government.

Although they are most likely to find new owners before the summer, it remains uncertain whether the club’s hierarchy are ready to meet Tchouameni’s valuation.
