Champions League and Europa League Draws: Quarter-final & Semi-final preview

The draws for the 2021/22 Champions League and Europa League are set to take place later today on Friday 18 March 2022 in Nyon, Switzerland.

The Champions League quarter-finals draw

Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Villarreal are the eight teams that have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Unlike the previous rounds, there are no restrictions in the quarter-finals draw, meaning that any team can be pitted against each other.

Defending champions Chelsea will look to retain the title despite their off-field turmoil. They would be keen to avoid fellow Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in the draw.

Man City and Liverpool have a big chance to meet each other, which would recreate their ongoing battle for the Premier League title.

Real Madrid would look to make a statement after coming up short in the UCL over the last three seasons. They produced a dramatic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are the other favourites, but the latter will be looking to avoid their city rivals, Los Blancos, in the next round.

Villarreal and Benfica are turning out to be the dark horses of the tournament, and every other team would want to avoid facing those two in the last eight.

Villarreal produced a shocking 3-0 victory over Juventus while Portuguese giants Benfica stunned in-form Ajax in the round of 16.

The Europa League quarter-final draw

The Europa League quarter-finalists are Atalanta, Barcelona, Braga, Eintracht Frankfurt, Leipzig, Lyon, West Ham United and Rangers.

The draw is also similar to that of the Champions League, where any team has the possibility to meet each other.

Despite hitting new lows by getting relegated to Europa League, Barcelona will look to make a statement by winning the competition.

The Catalan club’s resurgence under Xavi has seen them defeat Napoli and Galatasaray in the previous rounds.

However, Barca don’t want to be pitted against Atalanta and West Ham – who are the other two favourites of the competition.

Bundesliga duo Frankfurt and Leipzig are also strong contenders, while Scottish giants Rangers, who stunned Dortmund in the round of 16, will be looking to end their drought in European competitions.
