Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin: Preview – Prediction, team news, line-ups

Saturday’s Bundesliga action closes out at the Allianz Arena as table-topping Bayern Munich meet European-bidding Union Berlin.

Not long ago, it looked like the Bavarians had put the Bundesliga title race beyond doubt, but back-to-back 1-1 draws with TSG Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen have changed the complexity of the run-in.

After second-placed Borussia Dortmund closed the gap to only four points, Julian Nagelsmann’s side will be out for all three points against mid-table Union.

The visitors are still on the lookout for a European finish, yet a run of one win from their last six Bundesliga matches (D1, L4) saw them fall six points behind sixth-placed Hoffenheim.

Match Preview

Bayern Munich

Despite experiencing a downfall, Bayern remain odds-on favourites to claim a record-extending tenth Bundesliga title on the trot, though they have a point to prove on Saturday.

Munich’s win ratio of 77% in home Bundesliga matches is only second to Dortmund’s 85% this term, with Nagelsmann’s team picking up ten wins from 13 top-flight games at the Allianz Arena (D1, L2).

However, the Bavarians have delivered a mixed bag of performances at home since the calendar year flipped to 2022 (W2, D1, L1), failing to keep a clean sheet in any of those outings.

The record-time Bundesliga champions will be confident of getting a result here, having gone unbeaten in all five top-flight meetings with Union (W3, D2).

Union Berlin

Die Eisernen have suffered three consecutive road league defeats in the build-up to this fixture without scoring a single goal and are one loss away from setting an unwanted club record in the competition.

Union will take the field as overwhelming outsiders, but with realistic hopes of finding the net after scoring in both previous Bundesliga visits to the Allianz Arena.

Scoring may not be the visitors’ only concern going into this matchday, as they have also failed to register a shutout in 12 of their 13 away league games this season.

Conceding first could spell disaster for Union’s bid to pull off an upset in Munich, considering that they have only won one out of nine Bundesliga away matches in which they fell behind this term (D2, L6).

Team News

Bayern will be without long-term absentees Corentin Tolisso, Alphonso Davies and Leon Goretzka, though they are all nearing returns to action.

Niklas Sule will join the abovementioned quintet on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury, while Robert Lewandowski should be fit despite recent concerns regarding the Pole’s knee.

As for Union, Julian Ryerson, Keita Endo, Kevin Behrens, Genki Haraguchi, Levin Oztunali and Andreas Luthe are all facing a race against time to make themselves available to Urs Fischer.

Bayern Munich Potential Starting XI:

(4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer; Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Omar Richards; Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala; Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman; Robert Lewandowski.

Union Berlin Potential Starting XI:

(3-5-2): Frederik Ronnow; Paul Jaeckel, Robin Knoche, Timo Baumgartl; Christopher Trimmel, Kevin Mohwald, Grischa Promel, Rani Khedira, Niko Giesselmann; Andreas Voglsammer, Taiwo Awoniyi.
