Gary Neville backs Man Utd to leapfrog Arsenal, picks title favourites

Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Gary Neville has backed the Red Devils to leapfrog Arsenal in the race for the fourth spot in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have been inconsistent this campaign, and they are currently one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who have two matches in hand.

The Gunners are in control of their Champions League destiny, but Neville still believes United can turn the corner and leapfrog their fierce league rivals.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “It was a really bad night for Manchester United [on the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid]. However, I don’t know why but I still think they could finish fourth.”

“Whether that’s wild hope or the devil in me, but I still think they could do it and Arsenal might drop out. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t and if Arsenal finished fourth you’d have to congratulate them. But it also wouldn’t surprise me if United got it.”

United were ousted from the Champions League in midweek after a 1-0 defeat to Atletico at Old Trafford. They lost the round of 16 tie by a 2-1 aggregate.

With the result, the club have gone five years without silverware, but the early exit could be a blessing in disguise for the rest of the league campaign.

The Red Devils don’t have any other competition to concern them. They can play their entire focus on securing their return to the Champions League.

For that, the Gunners must slip-up. United could pile the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side by building a winning run following the international break.

Their meeting at the Emirates Stadium next month could be crucial in the Champions League pursuit.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have made things interesting at the top following their midweek win. They are now just one point behind leaders Manchester City.

The Merseyside outfit will have the chance to leapfrog the Cityzens during next month’s meeting at the Etihad Stadium. Neville feels they could lift the title.

While the Cityzens are still front-runners to defend their crown, Neville feels the Reds will be really confident in the run-in with their superb recent form.

He said on Sky Sports: “Now, they might not win it, because they’re actually playing up against a ridiculously good team in Manchester City, but the hallmarks are there.”

“The form’s there, the patterns are there, and if you’re Liverpool you’re really, really confident going into these last nine games. I’m not saying City aren’t, but if you’re Liverpool you’re confident.”

Liverpool are currently the in-form club among Europe’s top-five leagues. They have won nine league games in a row to come within a point of the Cityzens.

Pep Guardiola’s side went on a similar winning streak earlier this campaign, but the momentum is definitely in the Reds’ favour for the final league stretch.
