Where could Robert Lewandowski go next summer?

Bayern Munich’s long-serving stalwart Robert Lewandowski could leave the Allianz Arena in the summer as the Bavarians currently refuse to offer him a new deal.

The Poland international joined the perennial Bundesliga champions from Borussia Dortmund in 2014, and he has since developed into one of the fiercest strikers in European football.

But even though he is on the verge of winning the Bundesliga top-scorer award for the fifth season in a row, Lewandowski has yet to be offered a contract extension in Bavaria.

His current deal in Munich runs out in summer 2023, but the 33-year-old wants to commit to a new one before he enters the final year of his contract.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bayern are hesitant about opening extension talks with Lewandowski, which could result in the Pole’s summer departure.

Let’s see where the ex-Dortmund star could go if he decides to sever ties with the German powerhouse at the end of the season.

#3 Manchester United

Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors for Lewandowski, particularly amid Edinson Cavani’s uncertain future at Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan signed a short-term contract extension last summer. But after playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo for most of the season, he contemplates his future in the Premier League.

Boca Juniors looked on the cusp of signing the veteran striker before the start of the season before the Red Devils convinced him to pledge his future to the red shirt.

Things are likely to change in the summer, which may force Man United’s hand in the transfer window.

Ralf Rangnick’s men have struggled in front of goal this season despite boasting the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes alongside the abovementioned duo.

So they are in the market for a new striker, and with half of Europe trying to land Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, they could switch their attention to Lewandowski.

#2 Chelsea

Chelsea shattered the club’s transfer record to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge last summer, but the move has not gone according to plan.

The Belgian has faltered in his second spell in the Premier League following an inspiring two-year stint at Inter Milan, losing his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI this calendar year.

In addition to Lukaku’s underwhelming comeback season, Timo Werner continues to perform below expectations, leaving Chelsea short of reliable options in the front third.

Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech have soaked up the limelight as the Blues’ most eventful forwards over the past few months, but Tuchel needs an out-and-out striker to improve his side’s title bid next season.

The reigning Champions League holders have been touted for Lewandowski’s next destination on a few occasions in the past, and they could turn rumours into reality this summer.

#1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid have been continuously linked with a move for Lewandowski in the wake of Ronaldo’s departure for Juventus in summer 2018.

After having a few quiet transfer windows by their standards, Los Merengues could return to be protagonists in the upcoming transfer campaign.

However, like many other top European clubs, they have their sights firmly set on Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

Since they have encountered several roadblocks in their pursuit of Mbappe, the runaway La Liga leaders have devised a backup plan that could see Lewandowski move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Florentino Perez is no stranger to landing Europe’s top players, and the Pole fits the profile despite being in the autumn of his playing career.

Lewandowski’s age could be the only factor to deter Madrid from making an approach in the summer.

But if their efforts to sign Mbappe come a cropper again, the Bayern talisman could be their go-to option to spearhead the attacking line alongside Karim Benzema next term.
