Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz would consider a move to Arsenal during this summer’s transfer window, Corriere dello Sport (today’s edition, page 9) claims.
The Spaniard has been a key player in the centre of the park for Napoli, registering six goals and four assists from 29 appearances this season.
However, he could be on the move this summer, having snubbed a new contract beyond June 2023.
Ruiz wants to return to La Liga with Barcelona and Real Madrid among his long-term admirers, but would also consider the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta’s side currently have Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga as their specialist defensive midfield options.
However, Elneny could leave when his contract expires in June. Xhaka has been once again been linked with an exit with the long-term interest from Roma.
The Gunners could ideally pursue two midfielders. Ruiz would be an ideal fit with his sublime distribution. He has completed over 90 percent of his passes this term.
He has also averaged nearly two tackles per game and offers more creatively despite regularly occupying the holding midfield position.
Gunners boss Arteta has recently tried to play Xhaka in a more advanced role closer to Martin Odegaard, but the Swiss is not known for his goal contributions.
Ruiz would be a solid upgrade on the Swiss captain, and he could be available for a reasonable fee this summer as his contract expires at the end of next season.
The north London club may not be favourites to sign him, but qualification for the Champions League would greatly improve their chances.
Arsenal are currently fourth in the league with 48 points, one ahead of Manchester United, who have played three games more. Their Champions League destiny is in their own hands.
