Liverpool in pole position to sign Luis Diaz

Liverpool are set to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Porto winger Luis Diaz before Monday’s transfer deadline, The Athletic reports.

The Colombian has been in superb form for the Portuguese outfit this term, bagging 16 goals and six assists from 28 appearances in all competitions.

Several high-profile clubs watched him in action last weekend, and it now appears the Reds are in pole position to land his signature.

Tottenham Hotspur recently tabled a €40 million bid with €15m in add-ons for the left-winger, but their offer was not deemed sufficient by Porto.

The Reds have now offered a €60m package which is likely to be accepted. Diaz also fancies joining the Merseyside outfit over Spurs this month.

Diaz has operated from the left wing for 90 percent of the games in his career, and he could be a long-term replacement for Sadio Mane in the role.

Mane’s current deal with the Reds expires in less than 18 months, and a massive outlay on Diaz suggests the former could leave at the end of the campaign.

A mid-season deal for Diaz is a big statement from the Reds, who have a realistic chance of competing with Manchester City for the Premier League title.

They are presently nine points adrift of the Cityzens but have a game in hand. The clubs also meet each other at the Etihad Stadium in April.

The news will come as a huge source of disappointment for Spurs boss Antonio Conte, who had earmarked Diaz as his prime attacking target.

The north London club are looking for late reinforcements to spur their top-four push, and they now face a race against time to pursue alternative options.

Spurs were also interested in landing Adama Traore from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he has opted to rejoin Barcelona on an initial loan deal.
