Premier League Predictions 22/01/22: Leeds and Manchester clubs to win

Relegation-battling Norwich City cruised to a 3-0 win at Watford to get the Premier League Matchday 23 off to a high-scoring start.

Five more matches are scheduled to take place on Saturday as we look at the three best predictions to keep an eye on today.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United

Following an underwhelming first half of the season, Leeds United have seemingly found their feet of late, winning their last two Premier League games in a row.

Seeking a third consecutive league victory for the first time since May 2021, the Whites will be looking to sink Newcastle United and catapult themselves further away from the drop zone.

Since returning to England’s top-flight last season, Marcelo Bielsa’s men have gone unbeaten in all three league matches against the Magpies (W2, D1).

That, coupled with the visitors’ thoroughly embarrassing domestic campaign so far, suggests the Elland Road faithful have plenty to look forward to on Saturday.

Despite adding the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood this winter, Eddie Howe’s side remain one of just two Premier League clubs yet to win away from home this season (D3, L6).

Prediction: Leeds United to win

Manchester United vs West Ham United

Manchester United may not be playing the most eye-catching football under new boss Ralf Rangnick, but results have been going their way lately.

The Red Devils have only lost one of their nine league fixtures since severing ties with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November (W5, D3), whittling down the gap on fourth-placed West Ham United to just two points (see the Premier League table).

With momentum swinging in their direction, they will be looking to avoid losing their first two top-flight home games of a new calendar year for the first time since 1985.

Despite the Hammers’ utterly stunning Premier League campaign, David Moyes’ team will have to defy their ‘Old Trafford hoodoo’ if they are to bounce back from a 3-2 home loss to Leeds last time out.

West Ham have suffered 20 defeats in their 25 Premier League matches at the Theatre of Dreams (W2, D3) and are winless in their last 13 games here.

Additionally, head coach Moyes has never tasted a Premier League victory at Old Trafford in any of his previous 14 attempts as a hostile manager (D4, L10).

Prediction: Manchester United to win

Southampton vs Manchester City

Arguably the most in-form side across Europe’s top-five leagues, Manchester City head to St Mary’s Stadium to meet mid-table Southampton.

Despite being held to a scoreless draw in the reverse fixture at the Etihad, the defending Premier League champions will feel confident about their chances of maintaining an intimidating 12-game winning league streak.

Since taking charge of the Cityzens in 2016, Pep Guardiola has won four of his five league meetings with Southampton away from home (L1), keeping three clean sheets in the process.

A run of seven Premier League away victories will inspire Man City’s efforts to avoid going winless in both seasonal encounters against the Saints in the top-flight for the first time since 2002/03.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are unlikely to go down without a fight, having racked up an impressive seven-match unbeaten home run in the Premier League ahead of this fixture (W3, D4).
